Krystal Sutherland - author of Our Chemical Hearts
Tell us about your book – what inspired you to write it?
Our Chemical Hearts is a tale of first love and first heartbreak, but it's not your average boy meets girl story. I wanted to write a story about love that I would've wanted to read as a teenager (I was pretty misanthropic), so I tried to take some of the usual cliches that pop up in high school romances and turn them on their head.
Do you have a lucky writing charm?
No, I can't say that I do. I'm usually surrounded by pens and notebooks from Muji though - I do all my best brainstorming with their stuff, so I suppose that's kind of a lucky charm.
What was your favourite book as a child?
Easy - Harry Potter of course! I also loved everything by Tamora Pierce. Between her and J. K. Rowling, those two women were almost entirely responsible for the development of my imagination.
We know you are a talented writer, do you have any hidden talents?
I'm a world class procrastinator. Also, I'm pretty mean at Tetris.
Can you tell us what you are working on now?
I just got back the second draft of my second book, so I'm about to dive back into editing that. It's due for release in September - I'm so excited for people to read it!
